What a Cool God!

I guess I should start by confirming what you already believe about me… either way.

I’m a Dallas Cowboys fan.

Those of you who like me and the Cowboys probably just thought, “I knew there was something cool about her.”  Those who don’t like the Cowboys probably responded, “I knew there was something wrong with her!”  (just kidding!)

Either way, I’m a Cowboys fan from WAAAAY back.  I’ve suffered through the heartbreak seasons when they couldn’t find a quarterback, a running game, or for that matter any game at all (I don’t care who you are, you can’t win with 7 field goals and nothing else).  I’ve cheered and celebrated through their triumphs (the early 90′s were VERY fun!).  I was a fan when Roger Staubach was sending Hail Mary passes down the field, and Tom Landry was walking the sidelines.

My Dad (from whence I get my love for the ‘Boys) used to get the Dallas Cowboy Weekly, and I would read it cover-to-cover every week.  And I loved the Cheerleader section.  I couldn’t do flips, splits or high kicks, but those women were amazing to me.

Last weekend (Sept. 28) I sat in my living room folding clothes and watching my ‘Boys get beat by Washington.  During the game they mentioned something about the new stadium being built in Arlington, where the ‘Boys will move next season.  Suddenly, this wave of understanding sadness came over me.  You see, I had never been to Texas Stadium.  For as long as I can remember I have been enthralled with Texas Stadium–the Star in the center, the Stars on the field ring, the Ring of Honor, and the hole in the roof so God can watch His team play.  But I’ve never seen it live.

Then it hit me that if we didn’t go this season, I would never get to see it live, and that was one of those things that I’ve always wanted to do.  If I didn’t go this year, that chance would pass forever into oblivion.  For about three seconds I thought, “We should go to see a Dallas game this year.”  But I quickly tossed that off.  We have three kids in school, it’s a six hour, by car, trip, the tickets are expensive… Did I mention we have three kids in school?  So I brushed it off, sadly, with the understanding that in my lifetime I would never get to see the Cowboys play in Texas Stadium live.

Then came Tuesday, and you just have to know that God was looking down and smiling and probably even laughing.  My husband called to see if I wanted to “go on a date.”  “When?”  “I don’t know.”  “Okay.  Where?”  “Dallas…”

You’re probably smiling now too.

You see, at a fundraiser for my daughter’s school on Saturday, my husband bought to chances for Dallas Cowboy tickets… and he WON!

Picture this, please, I beg you because I seriously believe this was not some random thing.  This was God at work as only HE can.

We got the tickets (for the game on Oct. 5) and decided to look on the ‘net to see where these seats were.  I expected them to be upper-deck type seats (which would have been fine by me).  But when we looked, they were not upper-deck seats, nor were they even 30 rows up.  Our seats were literally 2 rows back on the 40 yard line!

Never…Reunion ad new 1-2014

You know, even if I had specifically ASKED God for seats… I never would’ve been crazy enough to ask for second row, on the 40-yard line seats!  Talk about getting a Lexus when you were too scared to even ask for a Honda!

Before the game yesterday, the four of us (my hubby, my 9-year-old daughter, my best friend, and I) went to Mass in Dallas.  The second reading said this, (just so you know, it really did… I’m not making this up!):  “The Lord is near.  Be anxious for nothing, but in everything prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.  And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, shall guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus…”

I’m here to tell you, our God is a FUN God.  He really is.

And MAN is He COOL!

As my best friend and I stood in Texas Stadium yesterday, looking around in awe around before the game (we got there three hours early!), I looked at her and said, “God is so cool!  Do you know that?  I mean, God is SO COOL!”

And He is.  He really, really is!

Long after Texas Stadium is no more, long after the Ring of Honor has been torn down and replaced, long after my ‘Boys have moved to Arlington, I will remember Texas Stadium, and I will KNOW that my God loves me even for something so silly as the fact that I love football.  I know because He gave me free tickets in the second row, on the forty yard line… when all I did was whisper in my heart that I sure would like to see the Cowboys play in Texas Stadium before that chance was gone forever…

    Hey Staci,
I just wanted to say how awesome this is that you got to go to a Cowboys game. I too have been in awe-inspired in this great stadium and I am not even that big of a Cowboys fan. Your story reminds me of a book I just read called When God Winks at You. You definitely received a God-wink. congratulations! I’m happy for you!!!

Thanks, Dawn! It was truly an awesome experience! And I’ve actually read the God-wink book. Sometimes there’s just no other way to explain something.

How Awesome Staci!!! That was really cool how you got to see the “Boys” before they move to their new stadium!! The new stadium will be nice, but the Texas Stadium we all grew up with, will always be the Cowboys “home”!!!
