Before we go further, let’s talk a bit about default triggers–those situations that happen to trigger your default response settings.

Default triggers come in a lot of shapes and sizes, and you probably have a lot of them along with many different default responses to go along with them.

For example, let’s take something relatively benign like your dog.  (If you don’t have a dog, follow along anyway and put something you DO have in its place.)

Now one thing you have to know is that default triggers can flip the switch positively or negatively.

Positive Default Triggers

  • You come home from work and your dog greets you happily at the door.  This can trigger happiness, peace, well-being, relaxation.
  • You are in your chair and your dog brings up the leash for a walk (assuming this triggers you positively)… you feel excited, hopeful, ready to go explore the great outdoors and get some fresh air
  • Your outside dog scratches on the door wanting a treat (assuming this triggers you positively)… you feel happy to make the connection, glad that the dog always seems to like being with you, grateful for the dog
  • Your dog wants to play… you feel playful, joyful, like life is fun
  • Your dog curls up with you to rest… you feel peaceful and connected

Negative Default Triggers

  • Your dog is home alone and you come home to find the place torn apart (or something you cherish broken).  This can trigger anger, overwhelm, sorrow.
  • Your dog wants to go play and you are tired.  This can trigger anger, upset, anger at others for not taking the dog out.
  • Your dog needs fed and no one has yet fed it.  This can trigger anger and overwhelm and fatigue at having to do “everything” yourself.

And that’s just your DOG!

Imagine all the places and ways your defaults can be triggered — your house/home/apartment, your children, your neighbors, your boss/employee, your car, your finances, your health, your church, organizations, your spouse, the time of day, traffic… and a million others!

We’re going to go through and talk about some of the major ones in the coming weeks.  But one thing I want to touch on here before we get started are the layers of existence.  The four layers of existence are:

Physical  – your physical body and the physical world around youCowboy Ad 2-2014

Mental  – your mental state, things that you put into your mind (books you read, etc.) OR things that you think or think about

Emotional  – anything to do with your emotions (so things that are emotional for you — a wedding, a funeral, or a particular feeling like being abandoned or frightened)

Spiritual — the part of you in touch with God (or not in touch with God)

Each one affects the others, and a trigger in one can sweep the others along with it.

So after we look at a couple of general triggers, things that truly affect all four in one whack, we will then break down a few and talk about each layer and the triggers in that layer separately.

Don’t worry if that didn’t make sense.  I promise it will as we get going.  I just wanted to give you a little map of the territory we will be covering so you’re prepared for the journey!

Until next time, live awesomely!

by:  Staci Stallings With our lists in hand, we turn briefly to a couple of pitfalls that I alluded to in the previous post.  These are two of Satan’s most insidious weapons:  comparisons and judgments. Now, I mentioned last time that I hate to cook and clean.  What I didn’t exactly mention is…

by:  Staci Stallings Today we’re going to start a new series.  As I was writing a speech for a recent event, I sought to put into words what I have experienced over the past 9 years–the transformation my life has taken.  My hope was to put it down so I could give others…

by:  Staci Stallings My “word” for 2014 is “inspiration.” Each year around Christmas/New Year’s I choose a new word.  In the past my words have included:  Faith and Healing.  This year, the word is “Inspire” or “Inspiration.” In short, I want to inspire as many people as possible. Well, here it is April…
