Remember my last post about “Disappointed & Embarrassed”? Well, this post takes that one and turns its focus.
See, it’s awful and horrible when someone tells you they are “Disappointed & Embarrassed” by you.
What’s far worse, however, is when you “Disappointed & Embarrassed” yourself.
What do you say to you on a daily basis? Is it kind, helpful, positive? Or is it mean, vicious and cruel?
The other day I asked my best friend if she would say to me what she says to herself, and she said, “No.”
Honest. True. But sad.
What words do you say to yourself?
Are they words like “Disappointed & Embarrassed”? Or words like, “We can do this! Way to Go! I’m amazed!”
I’d be willing to bet that if you’re miserable, it’s a lot of the first and not much of the second.
I heard the other day that our heart is filled with something. Maybe it’s filled with love, or maybe it’s filled with anger.
So, let’s say that your heart is filled with love, and some unloving person comes up and is rude to you. Most likely, your response, even if negative, will be soft rather than harsh, kind rather than cruel.
But what if your heart is filled with anger? How does that change your response?
What we have to be mindful of is that how we talk to ourselves is often what most fills our cup. Think about it, you spend EVERY MINUTE with you. So what you choose to fill your cup with is often what you’ve been saying all day!
Here’s a challenge. Start filling your cup, talking to yourself with kindness, love and grace, and watch the world around you change.
It really IS possible… for those who are willing to let go of how they’ve been talking to themselves badly… maybe forever.
